How the Cauldron works

Every item in the game has two cauldron numbers: an ingredient value (what it adds when you put it in) and a target (where it sits as a product). 47 items are flagged as cauldron products. The Cauldron sums the three ingredient values and outputs the product whose target is nearest. Each product therefore owns a window of sums, from halfway to the next cheaper product up to halfway to the next dearer one.

This rule is our own reading of the cauldron values, not an official formula. It reproduces all four fixed Cauldron recipes the game ships: Philosopher's Stone, Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. Combinations near a window edge are the most likely to break if a patch changes item values, so “Closest to target” sorts the safest ones first.

Craft time and heat follow a curve over the product's target (3–60 s, 1–10,000 heat per batch), which matches the craft times of the four fixed recipes. The Cauldron is unlocked by research in Tier VI (tech tree).

Source: craft time and heat curve: Community calculator engine: Cauldron craft time and heat follow a curve over the output item's cauldron target value. The time curve reproduces the craft times of the game's four fixed Cauldron recipes; heat is per batch. citation

Repeated ingredients: Community calculator engine (starfi5h, via alchemyfactorytools): T = (cost1 + cost2 + cost3) × samenessRatio, ratio 1 / 0.65 / 0.5 for three different / two identical / three identical inputs; output = nearest cauldron target. Unverified. citation

Advanced Cauldron

The Advanced Cauldron takes 2 ingredients. Community research says it picks its output from the difference between the input values, but the game works that out while you play and doesn't state the rule, so we do not list Advanced Cauldron recipes or guess at them: its results are computed in-game.

What we do know: it is unlocked by research in Tier VIII (see the tech tree), costs 20 Silver Ingot to build, and uses the same ingredient values shown in the table above. The 1.0 patch notes mention it: “Fixed an issue where Advanced Cauldrons could sometimes fail to find a product.”

Cauldron FAQ

How does the Cauldron decide what it makes?

The Cauldron takes any three items and adds up their cauldron values. The result is the cauldron product whose target value is nearest to that sum. 47 items can come out of a Cauldron; every other item can only go in. This reproduces all four fixed Cauldron recipes in the game.

How do you make a Philosopher's Stone in Alchemy Factory?

Put three items into a Cauldron whose cauldron values add up to at least 800,000 (its target is 1,000,000, and no product sits above it). The game lists Ruby + Sapphire + Emerald; by base value the cheapest set we found is Plank + Ruby + Emerald. Use the finder above to rank the alternatives.

How long does a cauldron craft take, and how much heat does it use?

Both depend on the product's target value: from 3 s and 1 heat per batch at a target of 1 up to 60 s and 10,000 heat at 1,000,000 (linear between the breakpoints 1, 100, 1,000, 10,000 and 1,000,000). A Ruby, for example, takes 30.9 s and 3,131 heat.

Can I use the same ingredient two or three times?

The game doesn't state how repeats are valued. Community calculators scale the sum by 0.65 for two identical items and 0.5 for three. The finder only uses that rule when you tick “Allow repeated ingredients”, and marks it unverified.

Can liquids go into the Cauldron?

No. The Cauldron has three conveyor inputs and no pipe input, so liquids such as Brine or Quicksilver cannot be added. They are listed in the value table but never used as ingredients.
